Vibration measurements in traffic with AuoVibe vibration monitoring

In the Netherlands, more and more speed bumps are being installed in roadways as a traffic-slowing measure. Cars that pass over speed bumps or other kind of traffic- slowing devices can trigger vibration that can damage homes and buildings, and create a nuisance for people inside the homes or buildings. In addition, railway traffic can cause vibration that can lead to damage and nuisance problems. Damage from bumps occurs frequently in older homes, but may also occur in new homes. By monitoring vibration measurements it can be determined whether the damage to a home or building was caused by speed bumps. Guidelines for both SBR Directive A (Damage to Buildings) and SBR Directive B (Hinder for Persons in Buildings) are applicable to road traffic. From the AuroVibe dashboard, you can decide which standard you want to monitor and measure.

The SBR Directive B (nuisance) distinguishes between 5 different building functions:

Health care
Housing (including houses, residential buildings, commercial vehicles, lodgings and accommodation buildings);
Office and education;
Meeting spaces (such as cinemas, theaters, auditoriums, churches);
Critical workspaces (certain areas in laboratories, operating rooms or study rooms).

For various building functions, different limits are defined.

Road hindrance can be made from the following:

•  Existing situation (current source and an existing receiver,  with a certain degree of habituation);
•  New situation (new source or a new recipient);
•  Changed situation (modification of an existing source).

Examination

With a vibration-caused nuisance, the following values are measured:

•  Vmax maximum vibration strength (advancing effective value of the vibration velocity, dimensionless)

•  Vper the vibration strength over a specific time intervals (quadratic mean of the maximum effective value per interval of 30 seconds)

The Vmax and Vper values are assessed against the following targets:

A1 - Lower target for testing the value Vrms max;

A2 - Top target for testing the value Vrms max;

A3 - Target for testing the value Vper.
